They were: Virginia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. People from Spain, France, and the Netherlands started coming to the “New World” in the 1500’s seeking wealth or escaping persecution. They came by boat and settled on the east coast because it was closer to Europe. The first permanent colony was an English colony called Jamestown. It was settled in 1607 and is now Virginia. Then in 1620, the settlement Plymouth was established and is now Massachusetts. France had control over Canada and the Midwest of the United States.
